Does Uninstalling a Shopify App Delete My SEO? What Actually Happens

It depends on how the app writes your SEO. Apps that edit Shopify's native fields (the Page title / Meta description metafields and image alt text) usually leave those values in place after uninstall. But apps that render tags through a theme app embed, a ScriptTag, or only from their own database will see those tags vanish or revert to theme defaults the moment they're removed. On uninstall Shopify also fires its app data erasure (shop/redact) webhook, so anything stored only inside the app can be deleted within about 48 hours. There is no native undo because Shopify keeps no version history for SEO fields, so a reverted tag has no 'restore previous value'.

If you didn't already have a backup, those old values are gone โ€” Shopify keeps no history.

The steps below recover what you can. To make the next time a 1-click undo instead of hours of CSV work: a daily snapshot of every SEO field. Free to monitor, no card โ€” and SEO Vault only reads your store unless you click restore.

Step by step

  1. Before uninstalling, check how the app writes SEO: open a product and compare the admin Page title / Meta description fields against the live page's source (View Source). If a tag shows on the live page but is blank in the admin fields, it is app-injected and will likely disappear on uninstall.
  2. Export your products to CSV first (Products > Export) - it captures the SEO Title, SEO Description and Image Alt Text columns wherever you customized them, so native fields are safe. This export does NOT cover collection, page or blog SEO, so record those separately by hand.
  3. After uninstalling, spot-check top URLs with Google Search Console URL Inspection plus View Source; if a title or description reverted, the old value is often still visible in live Google results for a few days or in the Wayback Machine (archive.org) page source - copy it back before it updates.
  4. Take a dated snapshot of every SEO field (products and collections) the day before you uninstall, so a vanished tag restores in one click instead of a manual rebuild. SEO Vault keeps a daily backup of all SEO fields for exactly this moment.
