Image alt-text went blank after a Shopify import โ€” how to get it back

A CSV import or theme/data migration left image alt-text blank. Alt-text matters for image SEO and accessibility, and Shopify keeps no history of it, so a blank import quietly erases work.

If you didn't already have a backup, those old values are gone โ€” Shopify keeps no history.

The steps below recover what you can. To make the next time a 1-click undo instead of hours of CSV work: a daily snapshot of every SEO field. Free to monitor, no card โ€” and SEO Vault only reads your store unless you click restore.

Step by step

  1. Stop further imports until the alt-text is restored, so you don't overwrite again.
  2. Re-import the Image Alt Text column from an export taken before the blanking, if one exists.
  3. If no export exists, alt-text must be re-entered โ€” there is no native rollback for it.
  4. Snapshot alt-text daily (most backups skip it) so the next bad import is a one-click restore.
