Translation App Overwrote Your Primary-Language Meta Titles in Shopify

Localization apps such as Shopify's Translate & Adapt, Langify or Weglot store an SEO title and description per locale, and if the primary (default) language is included as a translatable locale, an auto-translate or sync run can write machine-translated or templated text over your original default-language meta titles. Some apps treat the default locale's SEO fields as just another editable translation and overwrite them during sync, after which Markets serves the altered titles. Because the SEO title is stored as a single current value per locale and neither Shopify nor the translation layer keeps version history, the original primary-language title is replaced with no admin rollback.

If you didn't already have a backup, those old values are gone โ€” Shopify keeps no history.

The steps below recover what you can. To make the next time a 1-click undo instead of hours of CSV work: a daily snapshot of every SEO field. Free to monitor, no card โ€” and SEO Vault only reads your store unless you click restore.

Step by step

  1. Stop the source: in the translation app, pause auto-translation and auto-sync and remove the primary/default language from the set of locales the app is allowed to write to; in Translate & Adapt, make sure you are not editing the default-language SEO fields as if they were a translation.
  2. Recover the titles: restore the primary-language meta titles from your last product CSV export or backup file; if you have none, pull the originals from Google Search Console (Performance plus URL Inspection's last-seen title) and the Wayback Machine, then re-enter them via Products or a bulk import.
  3. Verify per-locale: confirm the storefront <title> for your primary market shows the correct title, check that hreflang and Markets serve each locale its own title, and Request Indexing in Search Console so Google replaces the wrong cached titles.
  4. Prevent the next one: SEO Vault captures your primary-language meta titles in a daily snapshot before any translation sync runs, so an overzealous localization app is a 1-click restore โ€” and it flags the bulk change and names the app that wrote it.
