Etsy to Shopify Import: Image Alt Text Blank and Listing SEO Lost (How to Restore It)

Etsy stores your listing's optimized title, 13 tags, and image text alternatives inside Etsy's own system, and Etsy's CSV export does not include public image URLs or the alt text fields, so importers (and Shopify's Etsy connector) bring in the photos and title but leave Shopify's image alt text empty and the meta auto-generated. Your carefully chosen Etsy keywords do not map to Shopify's meta title and description, and every image lands with blank alt text, hurting both Google Images and accessibility. Shopify keeps no version history of these fields, so there is no native undo: the original wording only survives on your live Etsy listings or in archived snapshots.

If you didn't already have a backup, those old values are gone β€” Shopify keeps no history.

The steps below recover what you can. To make the next time a 1-click undo instead of hours of CSV work: a daily snapshot of every SEO field. Free to monitor, no card β€” and SEO Vault only reads your store unless you click restore.

Step by step

  1. Stop the source: keep your Etsy shop and listings live (do not deactivate them yet). They hold the only copy of your original titles, tags, and image text alternatives, so leave them reachable while you copy the content across.
  2. Recover from Etsy and archive: copy each listing's title, tags, and image alt text from the Etsy listing editor (Shop Manager > Listings). For any sold-out or removed listings, retrieve the original title and description from the Wayback Machine snapshot of the etsy.com/listing/ URL or Google's cached result.
  3. Re-enter alt text and meta in Shopify: add image alt text per product (Products > image > Edit alt text) or in bulk via the product CSV Image Alt Text column, then fill each product's Edit website SEO meta title and description using your best Etsy keywords. Convert your 13 Etsy tags into Shopify product tags so internal search and collections still work.
  4. After rebuilding, install SEO Vault to capture a daily snapshot of every product's alt text, meta, tags, and handle. Alt text is the field apps and re-imports most often overwrite or blank out; SEO Vault detects the wipe, names the likely app, and restores your written alt text in one click instead of re-typing it image by image.
