Wix to Shopify Migration: Meta Titles and Descriptions Gone (How to Recover Your SEO)

In Wix, each product and page keeps its meta title and meta description inside Wix's own SEO panel, and those fields are not part of the product data that exports to a Shopify-compatible CSV. Most Wix-to-Shopify migration tools copy the title, body, price, and images but leave Shopify's Search engine listing fields empty, so Shopify auto-generates a generic meta title from the product name and a description from the first lines of body text. Because neither Wix nor Shopify stores a version history of SEO fields, there is no native undo once the new store is live: the original optimized meta only survives on your old Wix pages or in archived snapshots.

If you didn't already have a backup, those old values are gone β€” Shopify keeps no history.

The steps below recover what you can. To make the next time a 1-click undo instead of hours of CSV work: a daily snapshot of every SEO field. Free to monitor, no card β€” and SEO Vault only reads your store unless you click restore.

Step by step

  1. Stop the source: if your domain still points to Wix (or Wix is still live), pause any ongoing sync and do NOT disconnect Wix yet. Your old Wix pages are the only place your original meta titles and descriptions still exist, so keep them reachable while you copy them across.
  2. Recover from Wix and Wayback: open each live Wix product/page and copy the meta title and meta description from the Wix SEO panel. For pages already taken down, pull the original title and meta description tags from the Wayback Machine (web.archive.org) snapshot of the old Wix URL, or from Google's cached snippet.
  3. Re-enter in Shopify at scale: paste recovered values into each product's Search engine listing > Edit website SEO, or export the Shopify product CSV, fill the SEO metafield columns (global.title_tag and global.description_tag), and re-import. While there, add 301 redirects under Online Store > Navigation > URL Redirects from old Wix URLs so they do not 404.
  4. Once your meta is correct, install SEO Vault so it takes a daily snapshot of every product and collection's meta title, description, alt text, tags, and handle. If a future theme change, app, or bulk edit wipes them again, you restore the last good version in one click instead of re-harvesting from Wayback, and SEO Vault alerts you the moment a bulk SEO change is detected.
