Mega SEO Auto-Overwrote My Shopify Meta Descriptions β How to Restore Them
Mega SEO runs automated, AI-driven optimization that can generate and apply meta descriptions for you, so an auto-optimize pass or bulk run can replace your hand-written descriptions with generated ones across many products and collections at once. The meta description is a Shopify SEO field (the global.description_tag metafield) with no version history, so Shopify keeps no record of the previous text and there is no native undo. A single automated run can therefore rewrite store-wide descriptions with nothing to roll back to.
If you didn't already have a backup, those old values are gone β Shopify keeps no history.
The steps below recover what you can. To make the next time a 1-click undo instead of hours of CSV work: a daily snapshot of every SEO field. Free to monitor, no card β and SEO Vault only reads your store unless you click restore.
Stop the automation first. In Mega SEO, pause auto-optimize and scheduled SEO updates and any auto-apply rule for meta descriptions, and avoid triggering another bulk run β otherwise it regenerates over your corrections on the next pass. Check whether the same run also touched meta titles and collection descriptions, not just product descriptions.
Recover your originals. Re-import the meta-description column from a pre-change CSV export (Matrixify maps it to the global.description_tag metafield); without one, Google's live snippets still show old descriptions for a few days after a recrawl, so copy them now. The Wayback Machine's archived source (the <meta name="description"> tag) is a last resort for your key pages.
Rebuild by priority. In Search Console > Performance, find the pages earning impressions and clicks, write unique descriptions for those first (~150-160 characters, lead with the value and a reason to click) under 'Edit website SEO' (the meta description field), then request re-indexing of those URLs.
Going forward, keep a daily snapshot of every meta description β products AND collections β so a single Mega SEO run is flagged the day it happens, with the likely app named, and yesterday's descriptions restore in one click instead of a manual rewrite.

SEO Vault keeps a daily snapshot of every SEO field on your store β meta titles, descriptions, alt-text, tags, handles (products AND collections) β and emails you the moment something changes in bulk, with the likely app responsible. One click restores yesterday's state, just the SEO fields. Free to monitor and get alerted; $14/mo for 1-click restore.
